Business Writing Training: Removing Writer's Block - Seven Ways to Allow Creative Flow in Business Writing

Writer's block is a common problem and there are some practical steps you can take to ensure that when you write, it will be a piece that reflects who you are and what you have to offer. Business writing is a little different because writer's usually have a subconscious belief that business writing is more difficult or different because it represents you and this other entity, the business. Usually, we also have the belief that the writing will be scrutinized by potential clients.

Authenticity is the key in writing successfully. Learning how to tap into your core authentic values and develop processes from those values will help your writing tremendously.

1. Make the decision that you want to write: Even if you do not have a topic yet, just make a decision to write. Setting your intention in the direction of your desire creates is critical to removing your writer's block. If you are unable to make this decision, think of your indecision as a form of communication. What is holding you back? It may be that your Inner Genius is telling you that your subject is not hitting the nail on the head. It may be that your reason for writing is not aligned with your values or the values of your company. It may be that you feel nervous that others are reading your writing. Listen to that voice and shift your focus to get you into alignment with your values and desires.

2. Gather your thoughts: Even if you just use an audio recording device to gather your thoughts, gather your thoughts. Speak them or write them down. Get it flowing in your mind. Two additional great tools for this is to talk to someone else about it who can be a witness to your thoughts or use a mind mapping tool. Doing this is the equivalent of spreading your thoughts out in a tangible way. From this process, you will be able to get your thoughts flowing out of you in a less structured and informal way. Gathering your thoughts helps the flow of information in your brain and creates room for new information to surface.

3. Call upon your values: Write down your core values and see how this piece of writing can reflect that. Tie in your values to the goal and the piece of information that you are communicating about. Make sure that the main message of the piece or the solution being given in your writing aligns with your values. Once your values are tied in, it will be easy for the piece to flow.

4. Distract yourself: The next best thing is to distract yourself and do something else. This way, many of your thoughts will sort themselves out. How ever make sure the distraction is not something that tires you out or overloads your brain. You can listen to music, do a cross word puzzle, spend time in front of a colorful tropical fish tank or do some gardening. Distract yourself with something rejuvenating.

5. Get fresh air: Our bodies thrive on oxygen. Our brain needs oxygen to function optimally. Get out of the building and get some fresh air. In addition, take deep breaths. When we are feeling negative feelings, we tend to take very shallow breaths. Breath and stretch. Do yoga poses. Also, loosen up your clothes. Make sure your body is not feeling constricted in any way.

6. Drink water. 80% of your brain is water. The truth is that most people are dehydrated. If you are dehydrated, that means that you are starving your brain. Drink water and lots of it. While you are at it, also make sure you are not hungry. Thirst and hunger cripple your ability to focus.

7. Create a setting for successful writing: Try and write when the kids are at school or have gone to bed. Play some soothing music in the background. Open the windows so you can hear the birds singing. You know best what gives you inspiration. Set some time aside just to fulfill your intention to write. Give yourself an hour or two to sit down and write. If at all possible, try and make it the same time each day.

Combining all these steps will lead you to that mysterious part of you where you can find your Inner Genius. You will produce powerful masterpieces if you keep applying these principles to your prescribed writing time. Listen to that voice that knows there is a writer within.
